A Silver Lining in Global Warming?

Conventional wisdom states that global warming would be an unprecedented catastrophe. But Benny Peiser, a social anthropologist at Liverpool John Moores University in England, takes a contrarian view, suggesting that global warming may offer benefits.

Peiser suggests that because people are more heat-tolerant than cold-tolerant, cold-related deaths could decrease substantially, especially in colder regions such as Russia and Northern Europe. Meanwhile, healt-related deaths would be offset by increased use of air conditioning (though this might not be applicable in developing countries). Peiser also argues that, throughout history, periods of warming have coincided with general health and prosperity, whereas periods of cooling have caused just the opposite effect.
