European CyberCar Drives Self

A consortium of 15 European countries have worked with French-based robotics firm INRIA to develop a self-steering CyberCar, which is currently being tested along the Riviera in southern France.

The little electric car is proving ideal as a substitute for taxis on cramped streets. The CyberCar follows preprogrammed routes, and uses a laser guidance system to avoid obstacles. Tests are going so well that the developers are eager to progress to the next step: Allowing riders to request a CyberCar via cell phone.



Here in the States, a vehicle like the CyberCar would be best suited for small communities (such as those for seniors and "active adults") wishing to control or reduce auto traffic. They might also be used to supplement skycap service at airports.
