The Guiness Book of World Records has certified Toshiba's direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) as the world's smallest, at only 56mm (slightly over 2 inches) long. The fuel cell is designed for portable electronic devices, and can power an MP3 player for up to 20 hours on a full (2cc) charge of methanol. Toshiba is promoting the DMFC as an longer-life alternative to traditional batteries for power-hungry gadgets.
Toshiba plans to start making its DMFC available this year.
