It sounds like a toxic insect spray, but digital terrestrial television (DTT) is yet another option for expanding the capabilities of TV. Basically, DTT is regular broadcast television on steroids, providing interactive capabilities to audiences with ordinary TVs and without access to cable or satellite TV. DTT viewers could have access to on-demand movies and interactive advertising. DTT may also be used to offer expanded capabilities to cell phone customers. Best of all, DTT networks are relatively inexpensive to establish.
DTT may have a hard time penetrating the US market in the short term, but the rest of the world is exhibiting strong interest in the technology. A DTT-based pay-per-view service is being launched in Italy that viewers purchase via a pre-paid smart card, and in South Korea, a DTT network is being deployed that would deliver interactive services to cell phones.
